PERUVIAN HEARTS HOME
Hogar de Niñas

It takes hands to build a house, but only hearts can build a home.

Peruvian Hearts supports a small orphanage for girls located in the hills outside of Cusco. The twenty-nine girls who live at the Hogar de Niñas are between the ages of four and seventeen and each girl comes from a chaotic situation with a disheartening past.

In 2003 there were 30 children at the hogar who were hungry and malnourished, with extremely limited access to health care and poor opportunities for education. The government used to give this hogar a small monthly stipend for rice, flour and a little milk, but this was quite inadequate to keep the girls in good health. The girls were timid and lacked confidence. Their clothing was worn and tattered and their skin was badly chapped from the cold and wind.

Since its inception in 2003, Peruvian Hearts has been the sole source of support for this hogar. The girls who live here now have their daily needs met and are capable of dreaming. Most of the girls attend private schools and they all receive regular academic reinforcement in subjects such as math, music, and English. The girls also have opportunities to develop skills in areas such as computers, business, agriculture, culinary arts and handicrafts. Peruvian Hearts has given these girls the resources and tools they need to dream and plan for a bright future.

The hogar is staffed with three nuns who are Sisters of the Marianitas order from Colombia. The Sisters have created a loving and structured environment for the girls in which they can mature into healthy young women. After satisfying the girls' daily needs, Peruvian Hearts saw that the hogar itself needed some improvements and changes to make it a safer, more secure environment for the girls to live in. Peruvian Hearts has taken on some major renovation and improvement projects at the hogar Below is a list of completed projects as well as some of the opportunities that are now provided to the girls:
